I Was Born for This by Alice Oseman

Book Description: For Angel Rahimi, life is only about one thing: The Ark – a pop-rock trio of teenage boys who are currently taking the world by storm. Being part of The Ark’s fandom has given her everything – her friendships, her dreams, her place in the world.

Jimmy Kaga-Ricci owes everything to The Ark too. He’s their frontman – and playing in a band is all he’s ever dreamed of doing. It’s just a shame that recently everything in his life seems to have turned into a bit of a nightmare.

Because that’s the problem with dreaming – eventually, inevitably, real life arrives with a wake-up call. And when Angel and Jimmy are unexpectedly thrust together, they will discover just how strange and surprising facing up to reality can be.

Book Review: This was the third novel I read by Alice Oseman. As I've said before, I have been a fan of Alice Oseman since I was younger, I've read her graphic novel Heartstopper, so it was nice to read her novel. Unlike most of her novels, this one doesn't center around characters from her graphic novels. This book follows Angel and Jimmy who have a celebrity and fan relationship.

I like how the book discussed both sides of what it's like being in a fandom from the view of the celebrity and a mega fan. It realistically depicts how Angel was a huge fan of the band The Ark and how being in that fandom had such an impact on her. Meanwhile, from Jimmy's point of view, we see how toxic and draining obsessive fans can be for a celebrity, and how pressure can get to them. I especially enjoyed how Angel is a reflection of the calmer side of fandom and allows Jimmy to see that not all of the fans of his band are so bad, but the book doesn't just ignore the presence of the more crazy fans out there.

As I've said Alice Oseman always creates relatable characters that I can never find myself to hate or not resonate with, I will say this is my second favorite novel written by Alice, and I will forever recommend this book to others.
